Communities living along Israel’s northern and eastern borders face a reality that is often difficult to understand from afar. Security concerns do not begin and end with the borders of Gaza and Lebanon. The Jordan Valley is also a strategically important region where local communities must remain prepared for border incidents, smuggling attempts, natural disasters and other emergencies.
A new initiative is helping strengthen that preparedness by bringing together trained volunteers, drone technology, emergency equipment and cooperation between local organizations and regional authorities.
The initiative was recently featured by Kol HaGalil, which reported on the growing effort to reinforce security and emergency-response capabilities in Northern Israel and the Jordan Valley.
For Chaim Malespin, the project represents something larger than the delivery of equipment. It is an example of what becomes possible when organizations, local leaders, security professionals and ordinary citizens work together to protect and care for their communities.
After approximately 1,050 consecutive days of service and deployment as part of Israel’s ongoing security effort, Chaim came to an important conclusion: Israel’s security challenges cannot be viewed through the perspective of only one border or one battlefield.
The communities situated near the Jordanian border also require strong local security and emergency-response systems. The region’s geography, long border and remote areas create challenges that demand preparation, cooperation and access to appropriate technology.
Chaim has spent years connecting Israel with supporters from around the world through the organizations he leads: the Aliyah Return Center and Faithful Galileans.
The Aliyah Return Center assists new immigrants as they establish their lives in Israel, providing practical support that may include food, clothing, furniture, housing assistance, Hebrew-language learning and professional training. Faithful Galileans works to educate and train international supporters of Israel through volunteering, practical experience and advocacy.
The new drone and volunteer initiative creates a direct connection between this international mission and the immediate needs of local Israeli communities.
Drones are sometimes viewed simply as cameras flying overhead. In reality, they can provide valuable support across a wide range of security and emergency situations.
Along Israel’s eastern border, drones have reportedly been used by criminal and hostile networks to support the smuggling of weapons and drugs. There have also been attempts by individuals to cross the border, damage fences or exploit vulnerable areas.
Trained local drone operators can help security personnel survey large or difficult-to-access areas, examine possible disturbances and provide better situational awareness. A drone can reach certain locations more quickly than a ground team and offer an aerial perspective before responders enter an uncertain environment.
This does not replace professional security forces. Instead, it gives trained local teams another tool that can help them assess situations and coordinate an appropriate response.
The technology also has an important civilian purpose. Drones can assist in searches for missing people, help rescue teams examine difficult terrain and support emergency services during natural disasters.
The Jordan Valley is located along the Syrian-African Rift, making earthquake preparedness especially important for communities in the region.
Following a major earthquake, roads may become inaccessible, structures may collapse and rescue teams may struggle to determine which areas have been affected most severely. Drones equipped with observation or thermal-imaging capabilities can help survey damaged areas and potentially identify signs of people trapped beneath debris.
During a rescue operation, every minute can matter. The ability to gather information quickly can help emergency teams prioritize their response and direct people and resources toward areas of urgent need.
This is why the initiative is designed not only around immediate security concerns but also around long-term community resilience.
Preparedness cannot begin after an emergency has already occurred. Volunteers must be identified and trained, equipment must be available and cooperation between different groups must be established in advance.
The project brought together local volunteers, regional representatives and security and rescue professionals for specialized drone training and equipment support.
The volunteers are not distant observers. They are the farmers, teachers, workers and neighbors who live in these communities. When an incident occurs, they may be among the first people available to respond while professional forces make their way to the location.
Their commitment is one of the most meaningful elements of the initiative. They are choosing to invest their time, learn new skills and prepare themselves to help protect or rescue the people around them.
Technology alone cannot create a resilient community. Its value depends on the people who know how to use it responsibly, understand the local terrain and are prepared to act when help is needed.
The initiative therefore focuses on both sides of preparedness: providing practical equipment and investing in the human beings who will operate it.
No single organization can address every security, humanitarian and emergency need facing Northern Israel and the Jordan Valley.
The progress achieved so far has depended on cooperation among organizations, the Jordan Valley Regional Council, local security and rescue representatives, and community volunteers. This collaborative model allows each participant to contribute their own experience, knowledge and resources.
For Chaim, this principle is central to the mission. Israel’s communities become stronger when organizations work together around a shared goal rather than operating separately.
The project also reflects the idea of mutual responsibility. Supporting Israel is not only about speaking in its defense. It can also mean helping communities develop the practical tools, training and partnerships they need to respond to real challenges.
The drone training and equipment delivery are an important beginning, but they are not intended to be the final step.
Future goals include strengthening search-and-rescue capabilities, expanding emergency-equipment reserves and developing work involving trained service and rescue dogs. There is also a longer-term ambition to help make an ambulance available to support volunteer emergency-response efforts in the region.
These plans remain part of the initiative’s future development and will require additional cooperation, training and financial support.
The vision is to create a connected emergency-response network in which trained volunteers, aerial technology, ground-based rescue capabilities and local authorities can operate effectively together.
News about Israel’s borders can often feel overwhelming. People may care deeply about Israel but remain uncertain about what meaningful support looks like.
This initiative provides one answer.
Every trained volunteer increases local capacity. Every appropriate piece of equipment gives responders another practical resource. Every partnership makes coordination stronger. Together, these individual steps help build communities that are better prepared to protect their residents and respond when lives are at risk.
For Chaim, strengthening Israel means standing alongside the people who live on its frontiers, listening to their needs and helping transform international support into practical action on the ground.
The work in the Jordan Valley is only beginning, but it already demonstrates something essential about Israel’s northern and eastern communities: when people come together, learn new skills and accept responsibility for one another, preparedness becomes more than a plan. It becomes a shared commitment.
